A Rural Parish's Solution to Service for All During a Pandemic

posted on February 22

Today is the Day the Lord has Made – Rejoice and Be Glad in It!!
Just a little “scoop” from the Scotland County Parish of United Methodist Churches and the Gorin United Methodist Church - we are doing our best to follow all of the guidelines in reference to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Our circuit-ridin' preacher, Marilyn Fitzgerald, has experienced the Virus first hand, so she is on top of all of the rules and regulations.  These rural churches have not been able to meet in house except for a couple of times this year!!  It isn't hard in times like these to lose touch with our Christian friends and neighbors.
February 21, 2021, Pastor Marilyn tried a new way to get in touch with all four of her church congregations at the same time and not have to worry about distancing, masks, etc..  Through the auspices of NEMR Telephone Company, she set up a teleconferencing system and notified all parishioners to get on board starting at 9:00 a.m. for the first service, or at 10:00 a.m. for the second service.  We were so excited when the phone lines started lighting up.  Twenty-two folks figured out this newly set up IT system at 9:00 a.m.; another twenty joined in for the 10:00 a.m. Message!!   The sermon centered around the temptations of Jesus and how we are tempted each and every day --  most fitting for this day, as some might have been tempted to just sleep in this morning; but this endeavor was such a Blessing for those who chimed in. Pastor Marilyn even received a “thumbs up” from one of her college listeners!
During this past year of being isolated, Pastor Marilyn has gone out of  her way to reach her flock.  Some enjoyed the sermons she prepared and presented by video.  These presentations, as marvelous as they were, however, left some parishioners out because of computer networking, cell phone availability, etc.  Since teleconferencing has proven to be so successful as a mode of sociability long distance, we may have “stumbled” onto our official “back-up” plan!!
